Privacy notice
Last updated: 24 October 2026
The short version
- You can play without an account. If you make one, we store your fighter, your scores and a scrambled (hashed) password.
- Don’t use your real full name or anything private in your fighter or trash-talk. Nicknames work best.
- The site shows ads from Google. We ask for your permission before Google uses cookies, and we never ask Google for ads personalised to you.
- We don’t sell your information. You can ask us to see it or delete it at any time.
Who we are
Schoolyard Showdown at gameslife.co.uk is run by [gameslife] (“we”, “us”). We are the data controller for the information described here, which means we decide how it is used and are responsible for looking after it.
Contact us about anything in this notice at [privacy@gameslife.co.uk].
Who the game is for
Schoolyard Showdown is for players aged 13 and over. If you are younger than 13, please don’t create an account or upload a badge, and ask a parent or carer before playing. If we find out an account belongs to someone under 13 without a parent’s permission, we will delete it.
Because some players may be young, we design the game to collect as little as possible. Settings that share information are off by default, and we never ask Google for ads based on a player’s interests or behaviour.
What we collect and why
| Information | Why we use it | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter details: name or nickname, school name, year group, blazer colour, avatar choices, trash-talk message and an optional badge image | To build your fighter and show it in the game | Our legitimate interest in running the game you asked to play |
| Scores: points, wins, K.O.s and game mode | To show results and the public leaderboard, which displays your yard nickname, not your private name | Legitimate interest |
| Account details, if you create an account: login name and a hashed password (we can’t read the password itself) | To let you sign in and keep your fighter and scores | Performing our agreement with you to provide an account |
| Challenge invites: fighter details and badge image included in the link | To let you challenge a friend | Legitimate interest |
| Technical information: IP address, browser type, pages requested, recorded in server logs | To keep the site secure, stop abuse and fix faults | Legitimate interest in keeping the service safe |
| Advertising cookies and identifiers, set by Google | To show and measure ads | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
Please don’t put your real full name, home address, phone number, photos of people, or anything private in your fighter, badge or trash-talk. Anyone you send a challenge link to can see the details in it.
Badge images are converted to a plain JPEG in your browser before they are sent. SVG files are refused for safety.
Advertising
We use Google AdSense to show ads on the menu and game-over screens. Ads never appear during a fight. Google is an independent controller for the information it collects through its ads, under the Google Privacy Policy. You can read how Google uses information from sites like ours at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- When you first visit, a consent message asks whether Google may use cookies. If you say no, you may still see ads, but they won’t use advertising cookies to track you.
- We tell Google to treat this site as one that children may use, so ads are not personalised to your interests or browsing.
- You can change your choice at any time using the “Privacy and cookie settings” link at the bottom of every page.
Ads are chosen and supplied by Google and its advertising partners, not by us. We don’t endorse advertised products. Anything you buy or sign up for through an ad is between you and the advertiser, under their own terms and privacy policy. Please tell us if you see an ad that seems unsuitable and we will ask Google to block it.
Cookies and storage on your device
- Saved fighter (local storage): your browser keeps your fighter so it isn’t lost when you refresh the page. This is needed for the feature you’re using, so it doesn’t need consent. You can clear it in your browser settings at any time.
- Sign-in: if you have an account, a cookie keeps you signed in. This is also strictly necessary.
- Advertising cookies: set by Google, only if you agree in the consent message.
Who we share information with
We never sell your information. We only share it with:
- our hosting provider, which stores the website and database for us under a contract that requires it to keep your information secure;
- Google, for advertising, as described above;
- authorities such as the police, only if the law requires it or it’s needed to protect someone’s safety.
Google may process information outside the UK, including in the United States. Where that happens, it is protected by safeguards approved under UK law, such as the UK–US Data Bridge or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Accounts, fighters and scores: until you delete them or ask us to, or after 24 months without a sign-in.
- Leaderboard entries from players without an account: up to 12 months.
- Challenge invites: up to 30 days after they are created.
- Server logs: up to 30 days, unless needed to investigate abuse.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the information we hold about you;
- correct anything that’s wrong;
- delete your information, including scores and challenges;
- limit or stop how we use it, or object to us using it;
- give you your information in a format you can take elsewhere.
You can withdraw consent for advertising cookies at any time with the “Privacy and cookie settings” link. Email [privacy@gameslife.co.uk] for anything else. We will reply within one month. A parent or carer can make a request on behalf of a child.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Keeping your information safe
The site uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Passwords are stored only as one-way hashes, and access to the database is restricted. No website can be completely secure, but if something goes wrong that puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the ICO where the law requires it.
Links to other websites
The site may link to other websites, including through ads. We’re not responsible for their content or how they handle your information, so please check their privacy notices.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when the game changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed. If a change affects how we use your information in a significant way, we will show a message in the game.
